A light-emittingdiode (LED) is a two-leadsemiconductorlightsource. It is a p–n junctiondiode, whichemitslightwhenactivated.[4] When a suitablevoltage is appliedtotheleads, electronsareabletorecombinewithelectronholeswithinthedevice, releasingenergy in the form of photons. Thiseffect is calledelectroluminescence, andthecolor of thelight (correspondingtotheenergy of thephoton) is determinedbytheenergybandgap of thesemiconductor. An LED is oftensmall in area (lessthan 1 mm2) andintegratedopticalcomponentsmay be usedtoshapeitsradiationpattern.[5] Appearing as practicalelectroniccomponents in 1962,[6] theearliestLEDsemittedlow-intensityinfraredlight. InfraredLEDsarestillfrequentlyused as transmittingelements in remote-controlcircuits, such as those in remotecontrolsfor a widevariety of consumerelectronics. Thefirstvisible-lightLEDswerealso of lowintensity, andlimitedtored. Modern LEDsareavailableacrossthevisible, ultraviolet, andinfraredwavelengths, withveryhighbrightness. EarlyLEDswereoftenused as indicatorlampsforelectronicdevices, replacingsmallincandescentbulbs. Theyweresoonpackagedintonumericreadouts in the form of seven-segmentdisplays, andwerecommonlyseen in digitalclocks. Recentdevelopments in LEDspermitthemto be used in environmentalandtasklighting.
